Hi! You’re at the right place for friends and community. Here’s what Sisterhood does & is about!

Sisterhood has a variety of activities, adventures, programs, and events. On December 7, 2025, we met at Battle Republic for a private class just for our members. It was SO fun!

Building Friendships

We are all about connection. From hands-on art workshops to pizza parties to private fitness classes and tons more, we have a broad mix for ways to meet and have fun. We’re focused on creating opportunities for new friendships and strengthening the ones you already have.

Supporting Our Youth

We fund Jewish summer camp scholarshipsReligious School programs and activities, confirmation and b’nai mitzvah presents, and gifts for college students through our Precious Legacy program. In 2026, we’re rolling out our Junior Board Program, building leadership qualities among our congregation’s teen girls.

Bringing Judaism Home

Our Temple Traditions Gift Shop (online and in-person) offers beautiful Judaica for your home, family celebrations, and gift-giving. We also put activities together with religious school kids that they can bring home to show off too. Our popular Sisterhood Bulb Sale has put tulips and daffodils and such in Birmingham landscapes for 76 years now, beautifying our community.

Strengthening Temple Emanu-El & Community

Sisterhood provides significant financial support to our congregation and sponsors beloved events like the Purim Carnival and Mitzvah Day. Our Healing Shabbat was covered in the media. In 2025, we co-sponsored the Hadassah Mah Jongg Mixer and we partnered with the Birmingham Zoo to add a very large menorah to their Glow Wild holiday attraction that draws thousands.

Support Reform Judaism

Your Sisterhood membership includes membership in Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ), supporting rabbinical students, youth programs, and progressive Judaism worldwide. WRJ offers Torah educationpodcaststravel opportunities, and several Zooms each year including a regular book club and other fun get-togethers like a galette bake-along we had in November.

Last year among our activities, we made glow-in-the-dark fused glass mezuzot at an artist’s studio, took a yoga class together, and wrapped up the year with a Brotherhood-Sisterhood Lag B’Omer bbq supper. This year we’ve had a pizza party, our signature Sukkot event Lemonade in the Shade with an incredible potluck, hosted a Shabbat of Healing, Zoomed with other Sisterhoods for a galette cooking class, enjoyed a paint-your-own-pottery night, co-sponsored a mah jongg mixer, and had a blast at our private Battle Republic fitness class (low-impact boxing + strength training in a nightclub atmosphere!).

We’re casual and fun and don’t take attendance! Come to what feels good!

Our cookbook is a timeless tribute to our families. It’s Annie Rotenstreich’s kosher pickled tomatoes, Vidalia onion pie, stuffed cabbage, barbecue brisket, Mawmaw’s biscuits, schnecken, and Aunt Tessie’s marble squares (and a world of recipes for Passover)!
