In conjunction with Holocaust Remembrance Day / Yom HaShoah, we wanted to share a new project that our congregation is embarking on to memorialize the family members of our congregants who perished as victims of the Holocaust.
Several years ago, Max Steinmetz, of blessed memory, sparked the idea of creating a special Yahrzeit / Memorial Board in our Sanctuary foyers for our Emanu-El congregants to ensure that we always remember their loved ones lost as a result of the atrocities of the Holocaust. We are now embarking on this one-time project with a goal of having it completed and installed in time for Yom Kippur this fall.
Pictured, you will find a conceptual drawing of this new plaque. You will see a singular yahrzeit light at the top within the Jewish star, which will be illuminated twice a year – at Yom HaShoah, as well as during Yom Kippur. Along with the names submitted, the following will be prominently inscribed:
“The names of these Holocaust victims, which have been submitted by their Temple Emanu-El loved ones,
represent but a small fraction of the millions of men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust.
May their memory live forever. ~ 2022”
Should you have loved ones you would like included on this new memorial board, please provide their names by June 1, 2022. We kindly request a contribution of $36 per name.
To all our beloved people who perished in the Holocaust: you are not forgotten. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We hope this new yahrzeit board will help in our own small way to honor and remember those loved ones of our congregational family who were targeted for annihilation and fell victims of Nazi persecution — again, let us vow to NEVER FORGET.
