The Birmingham Hospitality Network, now known as Family Promise, is a unique network of local congregations, united to provide food and shelter to homeless families.
In 1998, Temple Emanu-El was invited to participate, joining ten other Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist congregations.
Sadly, surprisingly, the Temple initially rejected the offer. Being a man of compassion, and committed to those less fortunate, Rabbi Miller persisted, speaking eloquently about the obligation, the duty, the Mitzvah, of helping the poor.
And we listened to him. And we approved. And nearly twenty years later, we have housed and fed thousands of grateful men, women, and children. And our Temple, like our Rabbi Miller, is respected in the Birmingham community as having a big heart and a giving spirit.
This gift is one of the many legacies you have left with us.
