How was the Rabbinic Search committee formed?
In May of 2017, Temple President, Ben Weil, asked Helene Elkus and Glenn Fleisig to serve as co-chairs of a senior rabbi search committee. They accepted, and formed a team representative of our congregation. The search committee has 9 women and 6 men, ranging in ages from 20’s to 70’s. The search committee spent months holding meetings and conducting surveys determining the wishes of our congregants. We then posted our application to the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) Job Board and the process began.
How many candidates have we spoken to?
19 rabbis applied and of those 14 were interviewed via web conference. The committee invited 4 finalists to Birmingham to meet the leaders of our temple and our Jewish community in person.
What is our plan since we have not found a rabbi for next year?
Cantor Jessica Roskin will serve as our sole clergy as we continue our search throughout the next year. Our plan also includes:
- Hiring a full-time Director of Engagement and Congregational Learning to lead all of our education initiatives including our Religious and Hebrew School, Teens Program, and supervise the Director of the Discovery School along with creating engagement opportunities for all Temple members.
- Hiring a Student Rabbi from Hebrew Union College (possibly two) to visit several weekends each month to assist with services and other activities.
- Bringing in a Rabbi to assist with High Holy Day Services.
Is Cantor Roskin cleared health wise to do this?
Yes, her doctors have cleared her and she is excited about the year to come.
What can we do to help Cantor Roskin through her year as sole clergy?
We will have many volunteer opportunities available. Please continue to check our website for sign up options.
What is the process moving forward?
We will continue receiving candidates resumes and vetting them as we’ve been doing for the past several months. The committee may take a hiatus until July.
Do we continue to look for candidates or pause till next fall?
Most likely pause until July.
Does search committee stay the same or change for next search?
The committee is made up of volunteers. No one will be dismissed; however, it is up to the individual if they choose to continue serving on the committee.
